Pinterest Algorithm: How Does Pinterest Really Work?

If youโve been following my blogging journey, you know that Pinterest is my secret weapon. When I first started blogging, I had no idea how crucial Pinterest would become for driving traffic to my sites. Fast forward a few years, and Pinterest is now the main traffic source for my multiple blogs, helping me earn serious money. Last year alone, one of my blogs pulled in $700k, and I owe a huge chunk of that success to mastering the Pinterest algorithm.
Now, letโs get real. Understanding how Pinterest really works can be a bit of a mystery. It took me a lot of trial and error to figure out what gets pins noticed and shared. But once I cracked the code, things started to click. In this post, Iโm going to break down how the Pinterest algorithm works, so you can leverage it to grow your own blog traffic and make money. I’m also going to talk about my Growing With Pinterest course, in this course I share the exact Pinterest strategy that got one of my blogs to over $700k last year. Letโs dive in!

What is the Pinterest Algorithm?
The Pinterest algorithm is what determines which pins get seen by users. Itโs like a matchmaker, connecting the right content with the right people based on their interests and behaviors. Pinterest uses this algorithm to decide which pins to show in usersโ home feeds, search results, and related pins.
Key Factors of the Pinterest Algorithm
- Relevance: Pinterest wants to show users content that is most relevant to their interests. This means your pins need to match the keywords and topics that users are searching for.
- Engagement: Pins that get a lot of clicks, saves, and comments are seen as more valuable by the algorithm. High engagement signals that your content is interesting and worth showing to more people.
- Freshness: Pinterest loves fresh content. Regularly adding new pins and creating new boards can help your content get noticed. Even if youโre repinning old content, make sure it looks fresh with updated images or descriptions.
- Quality: High-quality images and well-written descriptions are crucial. Pinterest is a visual platform, so your pins need to stand out and look appealing.
- Domain Quality: Pinterest looks at the overall quality of your website. This includes how often content from your site is pinned, how much engagement it gets, and how quickly your site loads.
How to Optimize Your Pins for the Pinterest Algorithm
- Use Keywords Wisely: Make sure to include relevant keywords in your pin descriptions, board titles, and even your profile. This helps Pinterest understand what your content is about and match it with user searches. I go over this in my course, I will show you how to find keywords and help your content rank higher which will result in more traffic.
- Create Eye-Catching Pins: Use high-quality images that stand out. Vertical pins perform best because they take up more space on the screen. Tools like Canva can help you create beautiful, professional-looking pins. Additionally, in my course I show you how to create high converting pins that will get a ton of shares and clicks for years. I currently have pins from 3 years ago still brining in consistent sales every single month!
- Be Consistent: Regularly pinning new content is key. Use scheduling tools like Tailwind to plan out your pins and keep a consistent presence on the platform. If you want to learn how to schedule pins with ease, I will show you how in my Growing With Pinterest course.
- Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments on your pins and engage with other usersโ content. This can help boost your engagement and show Pinterest that your content is valuable.
- Optimize Your Website: Make sure your website is mobile-friendly and loads quickly. Pinterest prefers high-quality sites, and a good user experience can boost your domain quality score. In my course I also talk about the importance of your site’s speed and I will share information on how to speed things up if your pages are taking too long to load.
The Importance of Fresh Content
Pinterest loves fresh content. This doesnโt just mean new pinsโit also means updating old pins with fresh images or new descriptions. The more active and engaged you are on Pinterest, the more the algorithm will favor your content.
Understanding Pinterest Trends
Keeping up with Pinterest trends is essential. The platform has a built-in trends tool that shows you whatโs currently popular. Use this to your advantage by creating content that aligns with trending topics. Seasonal content also performs well, so plan your pins around holidays, events, and other timely topics.
The Changing Pinterest Algorithm
The Pinterest algorithm is always evolving, but my winning strategy has been working for me since 2021. When there are algorithm changes, I make minor tweaks, but my overall strategy stays pretty much the same. I wouldnโt have been able to make $700k just last year from one of my blogs if it wasnโt for Pinterest and this strategy.
